PCBs: these severe substances, which are carcinogen, mutagen and cause a wide array of serious diseases, are also persistent in the environment. What are they? Polychlorinated Biphenyls, commonly referred to as PCBs, are some of the most damaging substances ever created. They are bio-persistent, bio-accumulative, they spread easily in the environment, and in very low concentrations (from 50 parts per million) they cause severe damage to human health, including cancer, disruptions of the endocrine system and even mutations. PCBs are usually found within electrical equipment such as transformers, capacitors, switches and other sources, and can be detected with very simple sampling.
